Students crave real-world professionals who can bridge the gap between academic theories and practical application. They yearn for mentors who can offer guidance, share their journeys, and empower them with tools to navigate their careers. This is your opportunity to step into that role by volunteering, offering a "Show and Tell" discussion, and providing insights into career success. Real-life stories of triumphs and failures are invaluable—they inspire students to rise above average and embrace growth.
In 2018, I had the pleasure of speaking with Fisher College students to help them harness their youthful energy for career success. During my talk, Rise Above Average, I emphasized the difference between learning and applying what you’ve learned. While earning an A in class is commendable, the true victory lies in translating that knowledge into action. Sharing how education transformed my life, I highlighted how my experiences as a student at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst opened up a new world for me.
As a natural introvert, I discovered solace in storytelling and joined platforms like the Collegian, WMUA 91.1, and even founded my own arts organization called Boundaries. Back in those pre-social media days, marketing was a challenge. I still remember posting my first and only flyer for the arts club on a wall crowded with announcements. Despite skeptics pointing out its simplicity, that single blue flyer with its quirky italic font was the seed for something remarkable. Three years later, Boundaries had impacted thousands of students with special events, mentorship programs, and community initiatives. One friend even told me, “Allana, I stayed at this school because I knew that group existed.”
The success of Boundaries taught me an invaluable lesson: students need support to ideate, experiment, and grow into the solution providers the world needs. As professionals, we have the chance to help them navigate this critical time with stories that resonate and advice that inspires.
Here are three key strategies to connect with and inspire college students:
1. Pick a Story Where You Are the Central Character
Think of your journey as Dorothy’s adventure down the yellow brick road. Like Dorothy, you’ve faced challenges, met mentors, and overcome obstacles to find your way. Share a scary moment or a tough experience from your life and turn it into a valuable lesson. Personal stories captivate and stick with students, making your message more impactful.
2. Show Authentic Concern and Vulnerability
Students appreciate authenticity. Avoid speaking to them as though you have all the answers. Instead, share a bit of your own vulnerability. Think back to moments in your life when you felt uncertain or lost. Use vivid imagery—like stories told around a campfire—to draw them in. By highlighting the challenges you faced and how you overcame them, you create a space for connection and trust.
3. Challenge Them to Become Change Agents
Young people have immense potential to tackle complex problems, often in ways that surprise and inspire us. Encourage them to lean into ambiguity and use their creativity to contribute solutions. Rather than focusing on how technology is changing their lives, explore how they can use it to change the world. Empower them to see themselves as innovators and leaders.
By extending your professional passion into moments of learning, you can inspire college students and set them on a path to success. Let’s continue to rise above average and empower the next generation to do the same.
